In Karnataka alone, 65% of the total land area, approximately 1.23 lakh sq. km, is dedicated to agriculture. While these statistics are compelling, the reality faced by farmers is far from pleasant or promising.
Challenges Faced by Karnataka Farmers:
In Karnataka, a substantial number of farmers rely on rainfall for their crops due to limited irrigation facilities. The unpredictable climate, exemplified by a deficit monsoon in 2023 leading to the declaration of drought in 195 taluks, has exacerbated the challenges faced by farmers. Dry crops like maize and groundnuts have suffered irreparable damage, leaving farmers unable to recover even the cost of seeds. Fluctuating market prices further compound the problem, pushing agriculture into a neglected and risky territory. Consequently, the youth in rural areas are migrating to urban centers in search of more stable employment opportunities.
YuvaLok’s Response to the Agricultural Crisis:
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, YuvaLok, with its 25 years of dedicated service, has initiated various programs aimed at supporting and empowering farmers. These programs are designed to transform agriculture into a profitable and respectable vocation, ensuring a sustainable future for farming communities.
Agriculture Training Centre in Kamagere, Chamarajanagar Dist.:
YuvaLok has established an Agriculture Training Centre in Kamagere, Chamarajanagar District, Karnataka. The center focuses on training young farmers in organic and scientific farming methods, enhancing crop yields, and consequently increasing income. This initiative aims to equip farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the challenges of modern agriculture successfully.
Microfinance for Bore Wells:
To address the issue of limited water resources, YuvaLok facilitates interest-free loans through microfinance to help farmers install bore wells. This ensures a regular water supply to their crops, fostering sustainable agricultural practices. As farmers repay the loans, the funds are circulated among other farmers, creating a continuous flow of financial support within the community.
Diversification into Animal Husbandry and Sericulture:
Recognizing the need for diversification, YuvaLok supports farmers in exploring alternative vocations such as animal husbandry and sericulture. This approach not only provides additional income streams but also enhances the resilience of farming communities in the face of market uncertainties.
Tarpaulin Distribution for Rainy Season:
YuvaLok has distributed high-quality tarpaulins to 40 farmers, enabling them to cover their agricultural produce during the rainy season. This cooperative effort ensures self-help among community members, marking a significant step towards transforming the farming landscape.
YuvaLok’s Programmes for Farmers :
YuvLok has started an Agriculture Training Centre in Kamagere, Chamarajanagar Dist. of Karnataka to train and help young farmers in organic and scientific methods of farming for organic and better yield thereby increasing their income. The institute is also organizing interest-free loans through microfinance to farmers to help them install bore wells for better water resources and ensure regular water supply to their crops. When these farmers repay the loan, the same fund will be rotated amongst other farmers ensuring a continuous flow of funding.
